Effingham County is a rural community located between the Savannah River and Ogeechee River, forty miles from the Atlantic Coast, and adjacent to Chatham County. This close proximity allows many residents the opportunity to live in a more rural community and work in Savannah.

The 2020 U.S. Census reported 69,041  residents in Effingham County. The per capita income in 2002 was $34,545.

Effingham County Middle School is a rural public middle school housing approximately 1123 students in grades 6 through 8. Effingham County Middle School, formerly known as Central Junior High School, opened its doors in 1970 at the original campus located on Standard Ave in Springfield, GA.  As the county grew, the need for a larger campus grew as well, and with the opening of a new Effingham County High School campus in 1989, the original ECHS building officially became Effingham County Middle School. In August, 2009 ECMS moved to a newly constructed school located adjacent to ECHS.

ECMS has a diverse population of students, with 63.8% White, 20.8% Black, 12.1% Mixed, .9% Hispanic, .003% Asian, .003% Indian. Current enrollment is 1123 students and 19.5% or 220 of these students are identified as students with disabilities. Approximately 57% percent of students will participate in the Free/Reduced lunch program in the 2022 -2023 school year. Effingham County Middle School is a school-wide Title I school.
